Reflection

As a student in Child Psychology and Early Education and having to go through many attachments and internship at various preschools, I found it challenging to cope with having good relations with teachers and constantly having a high energy level with the children. After having some interaction with the teachers during my internship, I realized that there were many underlying problems that led to teachers feeling fed up and burnt out. Bad work politics and relations with colleagues on top of having a large amount of work to do daily. Therefore, I wanted to find out if this is really the main issue that early childhood educators are facing which lead to a high turnover rate in the early childhood industry.

This led to my group’s topic of interest and research. We all wanted to research more about this topic. However, when we conducted the interview with our principal of choice, nothing that we had really wanted to interview her about was said. Instead, the principal mentioned more about mega childcare ? Centres being the trend in singapore now and what are the challenges and problems that come along with working in a much larger childcare centre. She also mentioned how burnout is a something that is very subjective to each and every teacher in the sector, thus it is hard to measure and collect data on. Thinking it through, I realized that we can then research on how teachers that work in a mega preschool centre may face new types of problems which could potentially cause them to be more burnt out than compared to teachers in a normally sized childcare centre. Hence, this led to our new inquiry question: What are the challenges teachers face in a mega preschool centre.
